Whose egg is this?

We found this egg down the drive and think – but are not sure – that it might be a lapwing's/plover's.

    1. Exciting for us. Not so for the bird who it belongs to.

A few people have said they think it belongs to the Masked Lapwing. Because of where it was, we suspect a raven or other nest-looting bird had dropped it.

  2. It it was a lapwing egg then surely there would have been one nearby standing guard. They are very diligent birds.

Merry Christmas. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

    1. Oh, I know. They are great defenders of their nests and will take on absolutely anything, even helicopters and cars. A couple of weeks ago, we were driving home when a lapwing chick wandered onto the road in front of us. Mother bird rushed out and stood in the middle of the road flapping her wings in the same motion that a human would use to stop someone. I just wish we'd had a dash-cam.

The egg was stone-cold (no pun intended), so we think it was probably dropped there by a nest-looting bird like a raven.

We had a lovely day, thank you. Low-key but that's how we like it.

      Happy Boxing Day, Joan!

  3. Looks like a Masked Lapwing egg to me, very similar to the ones we photographed here recently in their nest when they left it for a short amount of time.
