UPDATE: Superb Fairy Wren Nestlings

Great news: The wren babies have fledged. Sadly we missed the event, but it's wonderful to see them bopping around with their tiny stumps of tails. Some of these photos aren't the clearest, but with them growing so quickly, there were no second chances.

  1. Wow! What a place to make a nest- how lucky to watch them grow and to then enjoy them in your garden.

    1. We have no idea what possessed her to build a nest there, especially as Alan spends a lot of time working on the nearby bench. Even the power saw didn't phase her.

  2. Hi Vicki, I'm totally amazed at how quickly they've grown! It sounds like that little nesting spot will be used over and over again :D)

    1. Incredible, isn't it? From what we've seen, wrens don't tend to go back to the same nesting spot. But who knows, they may decide it's safe.

    1. It varies from bird to bird, but there appears to be a correlation with lifespan. For example fairy wrens live for 5-6 years. Magpies, on the other hand, live for about 20-25 years. For them, from egg to fledging is about 7 weeks.
