Puggle Comes to Visit

Okay, I admit I’m besotted with this little puggle. But how could I not be? He turned up at the back door yesterday and plopped into one of the water bowls I leave out for the birds and had a good drink (see his pink tongue?). Quenched, he then preceded to investigate a pair of outdoor shoes.

  1. Absolutely! Besotted is a good place to be. I bet his mama was in a right state watching from a distance.

  2. So cute. I've never seen one in the wild. You are so lucky. I love the word "puggle".

  4. Not many people have seen puggles in the wild. A wildlife officer I know who’s worked in the field for years has never seen one.

I think this little one is a bit of a rebel and close to weaning, and why we’ve had the fortune to see him outside the nursery burrow. The mother echidna was nowhere to be seen yesterday – she only returns to the burrow about once every 5-10 days to feed her puggle.

Baby platypuses (the only other egg-laying mammal in the world) are called puggles, too.

  5. awwwww! you are very lucky and must live in a relatively remote place to get those kind of visitors!

(look at this cartoon, i only found this a few days ago, it amuses me to no end!)

  7. What wonderful fun and luck! You probably have the only visual record of a Puggle and a Croc playing together!!!

    Fascinating creature!

  8. Oh ... no, I don't know what variety of apple my neighbor's tree produces. A yellow green skin if my memory serves, and when my children used to pick them years ago when the original home owner was still alive many were resplendent with worms! LOL!!

  9. Love the cartoon, Nikki. :) I’ve only ever managed a glimpse of platypus in the wild. You’d have to be lucky to actually to snap a photo. That or be super quick!

We live near Yea, which is about 110 kms north-east of Melbourne. So not too remote, but we don’t have any visible neighbours. Yesterday’s visitor was an Eastern Brown Snake – unfortunately, I didn’t grab the camera fast enough.

Does your echidna have a cast iron belly, Jean Elizabeth? :)

    Chuck: LOL
